Bangalore: A total of 68 awards of the Yuddh Seva Medal, Seva Medal, Sena medal,
Vishisht Seva Medals and unit citations for both gallantry and distinguished
services were presented at the prestigious Southern Command Investiture Ceremony
held as part of 64th Army Day in Bangalore last month. The Investiture ceremony
was held in Bengaluru after a decade. The awards were presented by Lieutenant
General A.K. Singh, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC General Officer Commanding in Chief
(GOC-in-C), Southern Command, Pune.

service were bestowed upon the recipients. The Awards include one Yudh Seva
Medal, 30 Sena Medals (gallantry), five Sena Medals (distinguished service) and 21 Vishisht Seva Medals. Eleven army units of Southern Command were also awarded the Army Commanders citation. Five Sena Medals (gallantry) were awarded posthumously. That fact that the Indian Army is heavily involved
in counter insurgency operations can be gauged from the fact that almost all the
gallantry medals were awarded for acts of bravery in counter insurgency
operations. While it is true that soldiers get rotated in and out of these
postings and there are operational connotations to the deployment of troops in
counter insurgency roles, the army is losing some of its best and brightest
soldiers in counter insurgency operations.
