The Indian Air Force added a new repertoire in its medicare facilities by commencing open heart surgery at its premier Command Hospital at Bangalore. With this new Cardio Thoracic Surgery Centre the hospital now has all the specialties and sub-specialties of a tertiary care facility.
The project was initiated by the DGMS (Air), air marshal D. Ganguly nine months ago, who conducted the first-ever open heart surgery on a young air warrior with a birth defect of a hole in the heart. The patient is making an uneventful recovery and both the patient and the family are very relieved.
The second patient had a major valve of the heart replaced. Childhood infection had destroyed the valve leading to impairment of activities of daily living.
With the new valve, her heart will have better flow characteristics and pump
more effectively, allowing her to live normally. The re-furbished high
dependency unit, equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment.
