You took charge at MDL at a very crucial time and oversaw a near transformation of the shipyard. Looking back, what all do you think has been achieved and what challenges still remain?
MDL has successfully delivered first two of the indigenous stealth frigates. The teething problems of Scorpene project have been overcome. The challenge for MDL now is to implement integrated construction of warships to reduce delays in shipbuilding programme. |

In terms of capacity and capabilities, how well poised is MDL to face the challenges posed by both other defence shipyards as well as private shipyards, which are increasingly vying for a share in naval shipbuilding?
MDL’s Modernisation Project is about to be completed providing MDL valuable outfitting Wet Basin capacity, 300T Goliath Crane and Modular Assembly Shop. In addition, MDL is contemplating a relook at the infrastructure and create additional facilities aimed to further improve the capacities and capabilities to meet the force level requirements of the Indian Navy, particularly for submarine building.
At this point what does your order book looks like? What firm orders do you already have and what are expected in the short-term? What will be the timelines for the completion of these orders?
Two ships of P17 Class have been delivered. Last of the P17 is undergoing trials and would be delivered in early 2012. Present order book contains three ships of P15A Missile Destroyers, four ships of P15B Follow-on Destroyers and six Scorpene Submarines. All these are to be delivered within this decade.
