New Delhi: The fateful Mumbai terror attack on 26
November 2008, left many open-ended questions on the issues of border security
in the country. The assailants used the sea route to gain access to mainland,
giving the Indian border security a knee jerk it is still recovering from. The
threat from land borders have taken such diabolical proportions over the years,
that few envisaged the dangers emanating from the littoral blues. India shares
about 15,000km land border with different countries. Along with the complexities
of the border disputes, the peculiarities of some borders like the open and
porous frontiers, pose considerable threat to the country.A few days after

minister had
said, “Previously, we thought border means only
land. But after 26/11, the country is focusing on the land, air, water and even
space.”
The need to guard the country from unknown threats has become critical in modern age. Given the difficulties in the terrain such as high altitude regions, mountainous and riverine areas, etc., the use of advanced technology seems to be an inevitable option in the present circumstances.
TThe use of high-end technology is prevalent in many countries to address border security issues. One such popular technology is the Integrated Fixed Towers from Boeing’s Border Solutions. It was a part of US department of homeland security and was initiated to organise different components of the border management. This contract was awarded to Boeing in 2006. |
