‘There Has Been a Fall in the Local Support for the Militants’

Inspector General, CRPF, Kashmir Zone, S.K. Jain

What is your assessment of the security situation in Kashmir?

The situation is stable and we have a positive feeling about the coming months. Sure, the Samba incident has caused some amount of unease. It indicates that not only there have been attempts at infiltration, but a few of these may have been successful. But given the kind of system that we have put in place and the level of morale and motivation of the boys, we will not allow any untoward incident to take place.

How do you read the overall situation from now to the Assembly Elections?

The elections have not yet been announced and at the moment we are looking at their taking place in the last quarter of the year. So projections at this stage will be a little premature. But definitely in the run-up to the elections and the Amarnath Yatra, forces will have to be on their toes to ensure that nothing happens. Militants are not likely to remain in their hideouts. They will try and show their presence and reach in the Valley to send the message out that they are still around and can hit at the time and place of their choice.

Last few months have seen a lot of success against the middle level leadership of the militants belonging to various outfits. How have these come about?

There have been a number of reasons for this, the most important being improved co-ordination among the security forces. We are also getting accurate intelligence and of course, our men are mentally and physically prepared to take on these challenges. Besides, there has been a fall in the local support for the militants.

How would you sum up your achievement in the last few months?

We have been able to neutralise some very high profile targets. We recently got the IED expert of HM who was responsible for a large number of incidents, inflicting casualties on the CRPF and the army. I later learnt that he was carrying a high reward on his head. His arrest was due to the alertness of two constables who did not know that he was such a high value target. But the boys are now so clued to the ground situation that they are able to exercise their judgment. All this reinforces my faith in the abilities of our boys on the ground.
