Soldier’s Pride
The perils of an offensive stance |

| Major J. Suresh Suri, of 13 Rashtriya Rifles was martyred during a gunbattle with terrorists in the Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir recently. The 13 Rashtriya Rifles team led by Major J.S. Suri launched an offensive operation to corner the militants. Putting his life in the line of fire, Major Suri entered the house through the roof. On seeing the army officer and other security men, the militants opened indiscriminate firing. The security forces returned the fire. In the ensuing battle, the army officer and another trooper were killed. During the heavy exchange of fire, which continued throughout the day, security forces managed to kill Pasha and Mussa. The house in which they had taken shelter was inadvertently blasted. The encounter took place in North Kashmir and lasted for nearly 25 hours. A resident of Hyderabad, Major Suri was commissioned in the Kumaon Regiment eight years ago and had been posted to Jammu and Kashmir just an year back. Recently married, his wife was visiting him when the unfortunate incident took place. The promising young officer would have celebrated his 30th birthday next month, had the bullets not found their target. |
